Implementing knowledge systems in a distributed computing system is attracting more and more research interest due to the requirements for realizing complex distributed applications and for getting maximum concurrency in problem solving. To get an efficient implementation of distributed knowledge systems, we propose a novel object-oriented model which supports the functions of decentralized knowledge manipulation, hybrid knowledge representation, and concurrent, opportunistic and approximate reasoning scheme. Fuzzy set theory is also applied to construct the proposed model. In the programming layer, we develop a client-server framework to support the coding of a distributed knowledge system designed with the proposed object- oriented model. In this framework, the communication mechanism and protocol among remote objects are defined. The notion of proxy is adopted to realize the object communication mechanism. Both synchronous and asynchronous communication protocols are supported in the client-server framework. Finally, at the system implementation layer, we consider the issues about the implementation of an object-oriented knowledge system with the client-server framework on a physical platform such as the Unix environment.
