This study mainly investigates protential individual and environmental factors which may affect the adoption of coping strategies. In respect to individual factors, we have included sex, age, education, marital status, and family monthly income as demographic variables, extraversion, neuroticism, and locus of control as personality characteristics. In respect to environmental factors. we have included the number of life events and perceived severity of these events as life stress indices, received social support as the social support measure. Finally, we used the "Ways of Coping Checklist" to measure coping strategies. Using multi-stage systematic. random samp1ing, we home-interviewed 581 adults living in Kaohsiung City. The sample was composed of 327 males and 254 females. Most respondents were 20-50 years o1d, married, and had education above senior high schools. Most families had monthly income be1ow NT$60, 000. In this stuoy, we also attempted to revise the "Ways of Coping Checklist. (WOCC). Using factor analyses, we found four main factors: " seeking social resources", " plan and hoping", "emotional suppression", and "cognitive suppression". In hierarchical multiple regression analyses, We found that age, education, family monthly income, three personality characteristics, received social support and two interactions (interactions between life stress and neuroticism, number of life events and received social support) could all significantly predict the adoption of coping strategies. Finally, we focused discussion on these topics: (1)the revision of WOCC: its reliability and validity; (2)the implication for applications; (3) the 1imitation of this study, and directions for future research.
