CAD/CAM has been widely applied to the design development and production of new products. The input and application of CAD /CAM has changed the traditional design process and design method in concept and structure, and has even influenced design trends and styles. The efforts in R&D aim at "reducing products' time-to-market,lowering development costs, and enhancing quality", and also at changing the past "linear engineering" into "concu- rrent engineering." In the development of product design, proto- types have been created in order to allow advance design verifi- cation. This avoids design changes in the late stages of devel- opment and lessens the risk of investment. The final CAD/CAM data sharing among design models including prototyping is a major fac- tor in integrating with CAD system. This thesis herein investigat- es the problems, especially in CAD/CAM integration, which Taiwan's industrialists face in the creation of prototypes. This research also discusses Rapid Prototyping and the creation of design mo- dels by CAD/CAM. Finally, to propose the new design model -- "A Prototyping-based model for computer aided industrial design",and apply the model from actual case studies to verify its feasibili- ty. A "inquiring and consulting system for prototyping" also is resulted from the actual fruit of all research and case studies.
