The use of commercial arhtrometers on knee joint laxity diagnosis has been popularized in recent 5 years But we found only scattered reports on statistic features of normal human arthrometry, under awake (unanethetized) condition. One hundred knees from 50 normal adult Chinese, 25 male and 25 female, were tested using CA-4000 knee motion analyzer ( Orthopedic System Inc. Ver. 1.31c ). A-P translation values at various applying force were collected, under different knee flexion angles and neutral-internal- external tibia rotation. High variability was noted from our series. the Coefficient of Variance averaged 40% or more. The false positive rate amounted to 20% due to soaring right-left difference. The tester, the machine as well The tester, the machine as well as ested might be the sources of variability. The as the tested might be the sources of variability. The females are slightly more "loose" than males. About ha- lf of our tested knees conformed with the postulated cruciate model, ie. the descending order of magnitude at defferent flexion angles should be : 30°> 0°,60 °> 90°anteriorly, while 0°> 30°> 60°> 90°posteriorly. The values at internal rotation should also be smallest than other tibial position.
