Popis: Yoshinao Nakada’s (1923-2000) Collection of Piano Pieces for Children is a significant contribution to piano pedagogy. Published in Japan in 1956, it was reissued in the United States as Japanese Festival: 17 Piano Pieces for Students. This collection has given students an opportunity to experience various styles, to gain various technical skills, and to develop an understanding of Japanese culture.This document presents biographical information of Yoshinao Nakada, an overview of the introduction of Western music to Japan, and how Western music was integrated with traditional Japanese musical language. Descriptive annotations of each piece in the collection include technical prerequisite, potential pedagogical issues, and practice and interpretational suggestions.Overall, this study provides a practical resource for the effective use of this collection in elementary level piano instruction as well as collegiate piano pedagogy courses, while promoting a greater understanding of Japanese musical language and culture.
