The Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale (HLBS) was developed to measure change in health-promoting behaviors. The ability to measure the cognitive phase of behavior change provides a relevant clinical indicator for health promotion outcome measurement. The HLBS is the result of an examination of the theoretical basis of change in health-promoting behaviors using Prochaska and DiClementi's Stage of Change and Decisional Balance Scale. Scale items were assessed by Rasch measurement methods. The research was performed in three separate studies at various locations in the United States and included approximately 1100 subjects. Scale items were assessed by self-reported smoking habit, low-fat diet, regular daily moderate exercise behavior, intent to exercise, intent to eat a low-fat diet, body mass index (BMI) and health history. Support for the Prochaska and DiClementi's Stage of Change and Decisional balance were not supported in the data. A potential variable was identified called commitment to healthy lifestyle. Items and response categories properties were evaluated using Rasch rating scale methods. The HLBS provided evidence of construct validity and reliability. HLBS functioned as predicted for those with high level commitment and those with low level of commitment and intent to change. A new version Healthy Behavior Scale was developed based on these findings. Further testing is recommended. |
