We investigated the conditions for cultivating the alkaliphilic Chlorella sorokiniana str. SLA-04 that allow flexibility in biomass composition (for fuel, food and nutraceuticals) without compromising overall productivity. We performed a series of indoor and outdoor sequential batch cultivation experiments in media containing a broad range of N concentrations. Our results demonstrated that biomass with high-protein and pigment content was produced in media with high N concentrations content (desirable as food/feed) together with sustained high productivity. On the other hand, results showed that cultivation in sequential batch operation with low concentration of N resulted in biomass with low N and high lipid content that is desirable for fuel production; biomass productivities were similar in both the high- and low-N media. An alternate strategy of cultivation in media with low concentrations of micronutrients (i.e. Ca or Mg) was also studied. In batch and sequential-batch experiments, cultivations in media with low micronutrient concentrations produced biomass with enhanced starch and lipid content (relative to micronutrient-rich standard media) with a modest improvement in the biomass productivity. We also investigated the cultivation of str. SLA-04 in saline water and anaerobically digested dairy manure to improve the environmental/economic sustainability of microalgae production. In both these media, SLA-04 productivities were comparable with previous reported values for other mesophilic cultures. |
