Popis: This thesis provides the written complement to the thesis art exhibition, this, that, and the other thing, which took place at Urban Arts Space in Columbus, Ohio, from 15 February-19 March, 2022. In this text, I explore the visual, material, feminist, and personal research that underpins my painting and drawing practice. Each section weaves together a wide range of sources, including academic feminist scholarship, art history and theory, painting and drawing practices, TV shows and pop culture, visual analyses of my work, and personal narratives. I employ various forms of writing – academic writing, poetry, etymology, and lists – to uphold the different ways in which they convey knowledge and feeling. In Chapter 2, I bring together a close visual analysis of my painting Bent Back Again, a scene describing the realization of a sexual assault in the TV show, I May Destroy You, a discussion of Figure/Ground, and an account of the 3 waves of feminist movements in the United States. In Chapter 3, I describe my drawing practice and how it relates to bodily change through personal narratives, and I discuss how contour line and repetition in drawing may provide a metaphor for understanding identity. In Chapter 4, I discuss the existence of multiplicities in one’s identity by entwining the ideas of queer feminists with a visual analysis of my painting, Each Cleaves, an art historical discussion of the female figure inhabiting both Subject and Object positions in painting, and an argument against infinite possibilities in identity and bodily experience.
