Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) face disparities and discrimination within the healthcare system. Previous literature has indicated that healthcare providers across the United States have varying attitudes towards the LGBT community that may impact their interactions with LGBT patients. Research has identified factors, such as place of residency and religiosity, that influence attitudes towards LGBT individuals. There has been limited research, however, on factors affecting genetic counselors’ attitudes towards the LGBT community. As both the genetic counseling field and the LGBT community continues to grow, genetic counselors have reported counseling patient who identify as LGBT. This study aimed to determine genetic counselors’ overall attitudes toward LGBT individuals to compare to other healthcare providers and identify factors that may impact genetic counselors’ attitudes. With this study, the goal was to evaluate genetic counselors’ attitudes and identify ways to enhance genetic counselors’ perceived skills, knowledge, and attitudes towards the LGBT community. |
