Popis: | This study investigates the auditory mechanism underlying the perception of local spectral center-of-gravities (COGs) in an acoustic signal’s spectrum. By utilizing a model of the representation of sound at the level of the primary auditory cortex, we derive a model which produces measures of the perceptual COG. These perceptual COG measures are then used to model the results from four listening experiments in vowel perception and pitch perception. The results of two experiments previously thought to be incompatible with a COG mechanism are predicted using the perceptual COG model, and interpreted in light of the proposed physiological mechanism. The success of the model in predicting human listening performance in such tasks suggests the perceptual COG may play a prominent role in speech and pitch perception. |
