Popis: Maternal ADHD symptoms are positively related to lax parenting and harsh parenting; and parents with ADHD have experienced fewer benefits from interventions to improve parenting than parents without. Identifying factors that help to explain the relationship between parental ADHD symptoms and harsh and lax parenting would provide potential treatment targets to improve parenting outcomes for parents with symptoms of ADHD. Possible factors include negative automatic thoughts (NAT), overly-positive avoidant thoughts (OPAT), child-responsibility attributions, parent-responsibility attributions, belief in fate/chance related to child behavior, and knowledge of behavioral principles. The current study evaluated the degree to which each of these factors (1) are associated with maternal ADHD symptoms and (2) explain the relationship between maternal ADHD symptoms and lax and harsh parenting using path analysis of self-report data from a sample of 536 mothers of children 6 to 12 years old. ADHD symptoms were positively related to NAT, OPAT, child responsibility attributions, parent responsibility attributions, belief in fate/chance, lax parenting, and harsh parenting and negatively related to knowledge of behavioral principles. The significant indirect effects and significant direct effects indicate child responsibility attributions, belief in fate/chance, and knowledge of behavioral principles partially explain the relationship between ADHD and lax parenting; and knowledge of behavioral principles partially explains the relationship between ADHD and harsh parenting.
