Popis: Parents of children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience greater stress than parents of typically-developing children. Little is known about the relationship between different indicators of academic functioning and parent stress within this population. Additionally, the ADHD treatment literature indicates that improvements in child functioning are associated with reductions in parent stress. The specific mechanism(s) of this change in parent stress have yet to be clearly defined. The current study included a sample of 212 middle school students participating in the Challenging Horizons Program study, school-based treatment study for adolescents with ADHD. Linear regression was used to examine: (1) how improvement in child functioning or child functioning at the end of treatment, based on indicators of academic functioning, are differentially associated with change in parent stress and parent stress at the end of treatment and (2) if treatment condition is a moderator of the relationship between parent stress and child outcomes. The results indicated that parent stress was related to both improvement in child academic functioning and child academic functioning at the end of treatment, and this relationship did not vary based on whether or not they received treatment.
