Implementation of a virtual haptic back

Popis: The goal of this project is to create a realistic, virtual haptic human back. Haptics, the science of touch, is integrated into biology to produce haptic anatomy. Haptic anatomy is a key part in the future of medical schooling and training. In a virtual environment, costs could be cut drastically, with the same model being used repeatedly for different students. Modeling of the VHB took place over several steps. First, Cartesian back data was collected via the Metrecom SAS digitizer. The back of a live human subject was digitized, giving an array of three-dimensional points. Several methods (graphical and mathematical) were considered in order to smooth out the data. Trajectory planning with via points was the final modeling method. Upon programming this final curve fit (for 70 of the 100 strips of data) it was found to be smooth in the direction of the curve, but discontinuous in the perpendicular direction. Evaluation results proved this to be a noticeable fault, although the smoothed VHB scored higher in virtually every evaluation category. The underlying suggestion of most comments was that muscles, bone, and the spine must be haptically modeled to achieve realism.
