Binaural hearing neurons produce high rates of well-timed action potentials to precisely localize sound in space. Voltage-gated potassium channel (Kv) currents are known to be critically important for this auditory information processing; however detailed analysis of Kv currents in the highly organized sound-localizing nucleus of chick can better illustrate how sound location is coded differently at different frequencies of sound. Ultimately, these data will have implications for cochlear implants, attentional mechanisms to sound perception, and tinnitus. |
