A boy who appears in a dream is called Nemo by those who address him, andbelieves himself to be eleven years-old. Throughout this anxious and unsettling dream,many people come and go through "Nemo's" bedroom, most significantly The Man, whothreatens to abduct and murder the boy. Other interactions include members of hisimmediate family, an unhelpful therapist, a teenage girl who is the subject of hisburgeoning sexual desire, and a girl his own age with whom he once had an intimateencounter, but who his mother has told him is dead.Nemo is in fact a man in his fifties named David, who works for a multimediacompany, and his recent dreams have been inspired by two disturbing events; his beingassigned to design the promotion for a nonfiction story of child murder, and his recentdiscovery that a childhood friend he assaulted has recently died by suicide. David'sbehavior at work, insulting a client and sexualizing a teenage intern, nearly loses him hisjob, but an intervention by his wife not only soothes over some interactions but alsoinspires David to connect with the mother of his childhood friend. |
