The organizational politics literature has developed with limited consideration regarding the actual formation of politics perceptions. Previous studies have focused primarily on generic self-report POP scales as if politics perceptions were an exogenous variable. As a result, very little is known about individual and environmental conditions that bring about such perceptions. Additionally, although the politics process is frequently placed within stress models, research has yet to examine the specific role of cognitive appraisals in linking politics to outcomes. To address these issues, the current study integrates literature from sensemaking and stress theories to develop and test a politics process model to help identify when politics perceptions emerge and factors that impact how these perceptions are appraised. Additionally, this model is examined with a unique methodology to help ascertain the proposed relationships. |
