The motion of a two-dimensional rigid particle down a fixed incline is studied given the initial orientation, position, angular velocity, and velocity of the center of mass. A modeling procedure is designed that distinguishes between the three different types of motion: rolling, sliding, and flying with impact. Accordingly, a particle is assumed to be in one of the three states, each described by its own system of equations. The equations take into account friction between the particle and the incline, but disregard air resistance. The criteria governing transitions between the states of motion are derived. A computer program, written in MATLAB, implements the model numerically and is used to systematically investigate the behavior of the particle. |
