Popis: | The purpose of this research is to determine what is ~plied by staff development as related to meetings, to what extent meetings serve at present as a means of staff development and in what way meetings can be utilised to the fullest extent as a means to staff development. The aim of staff development is to make the efficient and to equip the staff for their school more task to the fullest extent. Principals should realise that the success of staff development depends on a concerted effort, on the use of facilities, but also on the creation of a suitable climate and on positive staff attitudes. The principal ought to reflect beforehand which aims, with a view to staff development, he wishes to achieve with each meeting in a specific school. The circumstances of schools differ and consequently the approach with regard to meetings will also differ from school to school. To create the opportunity for staff development the principal should already have reflected before the commencement of the meeting on such matters as the strategy he wishes to follow, the constitution of an agenda and the creation of a suitable educational climate. During meeting a teacher should take part in discussions as much as possible. The principal ought to pay attention to the establishment of sound relations while malpractices such curbed at the same time. is an almost unlimited as negative behaviour should be At this stage of the meeting there opportunity for staff development. Even after the meeting the attitudes of the staff members and the availability of the minutes will influence the success of staff development. Certain meetings, such as staff meetings, school managing meetings, subject meetings and meetings with novice staff members offer outstanding opportunities for staff development and should be utilised to the full. In the questionnaires principals indicated how they used the above-mentioned meetings to foster staff development. Deputy principals/departmental heads gave their personal opinions of events during and around the meetings in question. Certain inferences were made from this information.
