Popis: Photographic collections, increasingly present in libraries, demand numerous specificities, due to the fragility of the support and the representation of the content. The objective of this research is to understand the processes that involve the treatment of photographic collections in libraries, through the comparison of the methodologies developed and adopted. For the methodological path of the work, the qualitative-quantitative approach was chosen, which allowed raising a questioning of the problems raised. For the research, an online form with closed questions was sent to 30 libraries pre-selected for having photography collections, with a return of 33%. The study indicated that libraries adopt methodologies adapted to their needs and, in general, do not have objectives set exclusively for photographic collections. The formation of the collection is usually done through accumulation, which points to negative impacts on the entire treatment process, as the institution will probably not be able to deal with an unplanned collection. Of the studied libraries, 70% have other types of documents in their collection (books, maps, etc.) and 30% have only photographs. As for packaging, 70% of the institutions keep the photos in a separate place and 30%, together with the other documents. It was observed that 60% of the institutions carry out an inventory and 40% do not; percentage considered large, considering the importance of this documentation. Most institutions do not carry out preventive preservation (80%), which indicates that interventions are carried out only when necessary. It was noticed that great attention is given to the elaboration of the catalog record, suggesting that the more traditional processes of Librarianship, such as technical processing, are being better contemplated: the description of data to identify the document and its production, such as authorship and statement of responsibility, were cited by 90% of libraries; the description of technical data related to the support is made in 30%; data on the production and dissemination of knowledge are described by 30%; and only 10% of libraries describe administrative data related to heritage. In the notes area, the information most commonly described in the catalog record refers to: physical characteristics (70%); data on donor, sources and previous owners (50%); state of conservation of the document (40%); summary (40%); suffered interventions (30%); recommendations (30%) and circulation history of the photograph (30%); data on other formats of the same photograph (20%); and data related to the original document (20%). The catalog record makes it possible to articulate the photograph described with other documents in 70% of the institutions, allowing the user to retrieve other related documents. As for automation, 80% of the institutions have an automated catalogue, with 10% using the MARC format. Most institutions (60%) do not consider the technique to make the thematic representation, and 40% said they consider it, which indicates that the thematic representation of photographic documents, in general, revolves around the simple identification of elements present in the image. So far, it is understood that the research is an initial contribution to the study of methodologies for the treatment of photographic collections in libraries, having raised initial data and questions that may support future research in the area.
