Popis: The paper highlights the role of academic libraries in promoting and developing information skills of students in modern automated and hybrid libraries and their role in developing a knowledge society. It defines information literacy and major information literacy skills required by students. The paper explains information literacy initiatives in India particularly the role of agricultural universities in imparting information literacy courses embedded into course curriculum. It discusses the information literacy programs of German universities and basic models of teaching information skills by subject librarians at some German universities. The article also mentions difficulties into incorporating IL across the curriculum.
