This study aims at identifying the globalization concept in the Advanced Studies in Information Science Higher Education study plans, in Portugal and Spain. The specific goals are: a) to identify and select the conceptual lines which validate this concept, b) to check its incidence in the studies’ plans considered, c) to assess if, and how, this topic contributes to the conceptual context and supports the curriculum courses in the studies cycles outlined. The methodology is supported by a qualitative design which will happen in the following steps: a) literature research, performed in specialized dictionaries and in works of relevant authors in the field, b) documents research, conducted with the identification and the on-line selection of courses and study plans in the Masters and PhD programs, c) comprehensive comparative analysis, accomplished with the description, interpretation and contrast of the data collected. Based on the results, two key ideas are demonstrated: a) the emergence of two general conceptual lines, in the study plans of the programs of the countries considered, being these: Information in connection with: ethics, law, literacy and society, and sociology in relation to education, information and communication; b) assuming a mostly indirect relationship, with respect to the emerging conceptual lines and the representation of the globalization concept in the syllabus of the Master and PhD programs considered. Given the above, it is recommended that the study plans for the Advanced Studies’ Courses in Information Science consider a direct and explicit number of contents related to the topic of Globalization, as well as the connected concepts, in order to satisfactorily complement a nucleus of knowledge, thus allowing for the student / researcher the contact with the appropriate theoretical referential for a critical and reflexive approach the context of the object of study. |
