Since 2003 the Spanish Academic Libraries Network (REBIUN) has been working according to a strategic planning, set out now in REBIUN 2020 3rd Strategic Plan. The plan is based on the development of four goals or strategic lines, where the first aims to "improve REBIUN's organisation, communication and leadership" through five general objectives, amongst them "promoting the integration of the library in the university’s objectives". In this field, Spanish universities have been for a long time developing plans, policies and initiatives related to social responsibility (university social responsibility, USR) . This fact led the Line 1 responsible working group to set as a 2012 specific objective the preparation and presentation at the REBIUN’s annual assembly of a report on libraries contribution to USR.,which was approved in Malaga in November 2012, and that is the subject of this communication. The report is, first of all, a document which aims to promote thinking, learning and raising interest in incorporating the environmental, economic and social sustainability concerns into library management and activities, in the belief that he survival of universities, and libraries as well, is linked to their financial viability, their commitment to environmental sustainability and their work as socially responsible entities. |
