User studies are an important instrument of quality management in active and modern libraries. Usually user surveys look for the needs of users by using questionnaires. However, this type of research design is one-sided and does not allow direct contact to the users. For the correction of this communication barrier the project "Maktaba Yangu - My Library" has chosen an alternative pathway of user research. The survey uses ethnographic methods such as "photo survey" or the "group discussion". The aim is to produce more profound results and to connect with the participants personally. Respondents feel themselves taken seriously, their needs, wishes and ideas generate an important basis of implementing better services immediately: The Library for African and Oriental Studies of Vienna University Library has been redesigned, a social area and a new guidance system have been implemented. |
