Use of search engines is the most widely acceptable way for foraging information on the Net. Their wide use as an information retrieval tool has created the need for their evaluation as a means to offer better services to the public. This research attempts to record librarians’ views on search engines and their performance. In February 2007 a questionnaire was distributed to 16 individuals who participated in a seminar for unemployed librarians as a way to boost and refresh their knowledge. The search engines, which were evaluated were google.com, altavista.com, yahoo.com, exalead.com, google.gr, in.gr, robby.gr, find.gr. Each librarian was asked to search for a specific topic in all the aforementioned search engines. As a result eight questionnaires were filled out by each participant, one for every search engine. Each librarian recorded his/hers experience in retrieving information and evaluated the findings according to certain criteria such as recall and precision, relativity of the retrieved records and the way the results were displayed by each search tool. The combined analysis of the results leads to interesting conclusions about librarians’ familiarity with search engines and their view on the retrieved information. |
