Open access is both easy and difficult, a clear concept and complicated realities. How can we do in the digital age what publishers and public libraries did in the old days: make accessible to the public what is/should be public knowledge? In principle each academic can practice open access all by herself. Yet in reality things get complicated. Many issues are involved. Open access is a matter of digital access, it is a business affair, it concerns quality topics, it includes reliable archiving, it offers great opportunities for e-science, and it should reflect important varieties in academic and other professional cultures. In my talk I’ll describe and analyze where we stand right now. How can we persuade more colleagues to practice what they preach? What’s the problem? How do we get into a win-win situation? I’ll speak about the attitude of the academic community itself, alongside the diverse interests of a variety of outside stakeholders that play an important part in future developments. |
