The book is the result of the international conference held in Warsaw in October 2017. It is composed of 19 papers in Italian and French and an Appedix with a text by the Count Stanislas Kostka Potocki (1755-1821). The papers, written by 17 authors from Italy, Germany and Poland concern mostly the achievements in the field of the visual arts of Count Potocki and the last King of Poland - Stanislas Augustus Poniatowski (1732-1798). They both paved the way for the creation of the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw along with Museum of Fine Arts, which included 753 plaster casts of ancient and Renaissance sculptures. The School and its collections, together with the Print Room of the King, then acquired by the University of Warsaw, had great impact on the strength of the classical tradition in Poland. However, the book focusses not only on the impact of artistic ideas born in Rome and then transmitted to Warsaw (often through Bologna and Dresden) but also on the Villa Albani, Capitoline Museums and the Villa of Pliny the Younger at Laurentum near Rome. In'Roma e Varsavia'are discussed both the activity of Italian artists in Warsaw and Poles, such as Smuglewicz, in Rome. The book fills the gap that existed until now with regard to the artistic dialog between the two great cities. |
