The economy has grown strongly since 2015, bolstered by large investment projects and buoyant tourism. Banking sector health continues to improve, with private credit growing and balance sheets strengthening. While the construction of the first phase of a major highway project has boosted economic growth, it has also raised government debt, with a cost of nearly ¼ of GDP. To strengthen fiscal sustainability, in 2017 the authorities began implementing a well-specified medium-term fiscal adjustment strategy, in line with staff advice. |
