Considering the historical processes through the history of science and technology and of navigation in particular (in relation to the emergence of the American continent) is justified by the importance that the literature about "el arte de navegar" assumed in the 16th century. Analyzing the practices and knowledge of navigation implies the reconstruction of a whole process linked to a phase in global history starting from the inscription of the American continent on the map. Such a perspective is immediately political and geopolitical. To what extent did the art of navigation as a cause and consequence of nautical experiences (the first meaning of "Americanization of knowledge") impact global history? If there was a process of Americanization it is because going to America to reach Asia did not simply mean a simple navigation: from this new continent and the two vast oceans which surround it, new questionsand new practices arose, in extreme conditions which structured new spatial dynamics on a global scale. |
