Popis: After the conquest, the Spanish Onomastic System practically replaced those of the native languages. Tibón (1961) accounts for some Otomi onomastic vestiges until the eighteenth century, although there is no record of the Mazahuas. Currently, due to the growing interest in the revitalization and strengthening of national languages, the grammar and phonetics of these languages have been documented to a large extent, as well as vocabulary records, among which certain names appear but their structure seems to be adaptations of hypocoristics and word truncations (among other formation processes such as syncopation, shortening, apheresis, etc.). To explore this phenomenon, a corpus of names taken from the Calendario de Galván (2016) is composed and Mazahua speakers are interviewed to elicit the phonological realization of these names. An analysis is made from the lexicological and phonetic-phonological points of view to verify that the Mazahua onomastic pattern is an adaptation of Spanish hypocoristics and truncations. The preliminary analysis points to the phonological adequacy of the vowel harmony of the Mazahua structure.
