A world-renowned star since Titanic (James Cameron, 1996), choosing to later star in independent auteur films such as Jane Campion’s Holy Smoke (1999), Kate Winslet made a new turning point in her career by playing the heroine of Mildred Pierce, a mini-series directed by Todd Haynes for cable channel HBO in 2011. Our article seeks to shed light on the aesthetic and cultural issues surrounding this transition from the star of the cinema screen to that of television. In particular, it tries to show how the actress’ persona has nourished the character’s interpretation, but also how the latter renews it and reflects Winslet’s conflictual relationship with celebrity and stardom. |
