Popis: In many African countries there were, and sometimes still are, institutionalised figures of gender diversity. Such is the case in Senegal of the Góor-jigéen, in Wolof, literally “man-woman”. Referred to as of the 19th century in some observers’ accounts, this figure has rarely been described or analysed precisely in scientific literature. For a long time, the Góor-jigéen was a biological man with female attributes and was given preference in fulfilling certain social functions. Their status and place were recognised in Senegalese society. Gradually, the expression has become synonymous with male homosexuals and is today usually used as an insult. The term has therefore been subjected to a ‘negative resignification’, conveying the transformation of a gender category into a sexual orientation category. This article retraces the history of the figure of the Góor-jigéen and analyses the conditions which enabled the transformation of its signification and social positions.
