In 1970 and 1971, French far-left activists who had recently be sentenced to prison initiated two hunger strikes so as to be granted the beneficial status of political prisoner. Their struggle was supported by an impressive campaign. As they were discovering the prison universe, those activists showed their solidarity with ordinary prisoners and stood together with them. This protest movement gave birth to the GIP, a prison information group of intellectuals among whom French philosopher Michel Foucault played a major part. |
