Popis: Lactantius makes use of mythology in order to try and convince his pagan readers to renounce paganism and convert to Christianity. Discernible in him is the wilful purpose of a global criticism of mythology, through the poets, the philosophers, the oracles, pagan or believed as such, in other words through all that the pagans of his day owned up to. The political and contemporary aspect of the polemics is clear : Lactantius is clearly aiming at the Tetrarchs, which actualizes the commonplaces of the criticism of the gods. Accordingly, the evhemerist interpretation combines with the determination to discredit a persecuting power and convince the lettered pagans, at least those who were not fanatics. The political and ideological link between persecution on the one hand and polytheism and mythology on the other hand clearly appears in a ≪ history of religions ≫ oriented in compliance with an apologetic perspective.
