The use of ionic liquids (ILs) in the health care sector has leveraged many existing methodologies. Their unique property of tunability has added new dimensions to conventional therapies. Skin-related applications of ILs find a large area of potential research, which can be continued with advances in the generation of newer type of ILs in the coming future.Transdermal drug delivery using ILs is a promising area that requires extensive studies to be implemented for effective strategies. These may include designing multifunctional ILs which could deliver drug molecules like proteins, peptides, and siRNAs. Recently, the potential of ILs as antimicrobials and their role in preventing biofilm formation has been discovered. An extension of this property has been to use them in wound healing applications. Interesting findings have been made with ILs used in combination with both natural and synthetic polymers. ILs also hold a bright future in exploration of other possibilities such as vaccine and insulin delivery. The review thus encompasses the latest developments in the field of ILs applied for skin-associated research. |
