Fundamentalism is a symptom of postmodernity, which is characterized by the collapse of the traditional foundations of the subject and by the hegemony of the discourse of science. This symptom calls for interpretation. Thus, fundamentalism reveals to postmodernity an obscured face of itself, due to a confusion between belief and knowledge. As a form of religious scientism, fundamentalism is a pathological way of articulating founding event, textual testimony and desire for the origin, in an attempt to control meaning. In the end, fundamentalism today asks us a double question: what is the meaning of believing and reading? |
