This study envisages the representation of melancholy in seventeenth-century French and Spanish drama as the basis of a reflection on the relation between disease and therapy. The distinction between comic and more “serious” melancholy conditions the possibility of a cure as well as the tragic status of the plays, thus showing that there is a link between therapy and the genre of these works. The representation of the cure on stage as a treatment administered to the hero can be seen as a mise en abyme effect, as it also offers a reflexive discourse on the relationship between the play and the spectators. |
