In context with the current discussion on the recent increase of violent storms over the North Atlantic (NA) two time series are discussed in order to give a more reliable evaluation of these extreme events. By means of an existing manually derived time series on the number of extreme low pressure events since winter 1956/57 and a long daily sea-level pressure data set available on northern hemispheric grid points since December 1880 an attempt is made to estimate the number of extreme lows before 1956/57. |
