Popis: The river basins of lowland South America represent important spaces for understanding diverse issues in the archaeology of South America. One of these is the Ribeira de Iguape basin, located in the southeast of São Paulo state and northeastern Paraná state (southeastern and southern Brazil). The goal of this paper is to present a brief history of archaeological research and a synthesis of precolonial occupations in this basin. With more than one century of regional archaeological investigations, coastal and riverine shell mounds, lithic sites, ceramic sites (mostly Jê, Itararé-Taquara tradition and few sites of Tupiguarani tradition) have been identified.
