Popis: The cell wall and cytoplasmic MreB polymers are important for bacterial cell shape. However, Spiroplasma cells lack a cell wall and still display a helical shape and kink-based motility, which is thought to rely on five MreB isoforms and a fibril protein. Here, Lartigue et al. show that heterologous expression of a single Spiroplasma MreB isoform confers helical shape and kinking ability to Mycoplasma cells, which are naturally spherical and non-motile.
