Popis: This article analyses, quantitatively, some social and linguistic varieties which determine variable number agreement in the noun phrase in L2 Portuguese spoken in Maputo, Mozambique. The L2 speakers of Portuguese represented in the study have a Bantu language as their L1. From the analysis and comparison with prior study of variable number agreement in the noun phrase (NP) in African and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese, we discuss some previously suggested explanations for this phenomenon. The result of the analysis of social variables age of outset of Portuguese acquisition and age indicate that variable number agreement in the NP in Mozambican Portuguese is a phenomenon that relates to language contact. The analysis of the linguistic variable position in relation to the nucleus/linear position servesthe purpose of discussing the hypothesis of the influence of Bantu languages on certain variable number agreement syntactic structures. Previous results support this hypothesis. The comparison with data from Portuguese with no Bantu substrate raise the need to also the influence of other African languages and/or more general language contact explanations.
