Popis: This article investigates the development of the contemporary Algerian culture with its religious and intellectual movements and schools of thought. It proposes that Sufism played a central role in transforming the Algerian society during the 19th century and the French invasion. A historical approach was adopted with a descriptive approach to investigate specific features of a social situation that occurred in the 19th century in Algeria. However, it points to divisions within the sect between reformists and fatalists. The paper focuses on four major areas of study: the political, social, and religious environment in Algeria at the end of the 19th century, the dominance of Sufism and Sufi orders during the same period, the French colonial plans to subvert religion in Algeria, and the religious reformation movements in Algeria during the 19th century.
