Popis: | The article focuses on the research of pseudoborrowing as one of the modified cognitive means of creating occasionalisms in English postmodern literary text. Сognitive mechanisms and procedures underlying cognitive word-formation have been viewed in the article. There should be distinguished the main three types of occasional word-formation according to the type of knowledge pointed out by Vasyl Byalyk: aggregated, condensed and modified. This article characterizes one of modified means of creating occasionalisms in English postmodern literary text – pseudoborrowing. Pseudoborrowing has such differentiating features as the presence of three operations: 1) borrowings; 2) convergence of the borrowed word, unit or its component with the suffix, affix, word or word combination of the recipient language on the basis of a language game; 3) creation of occasionalism with different connotative marking (emotionality, evaluation, expressiveness, paradoxality, humorous colouring). Pseudoborrowings are the borrowings transformed from other languages and adapted to a new language system. The base for the research is chick-lit fiction, as it presents genuinely innovative mixture of forms, which is displayed in different types of occasional word-formation processes. As the article triggers cognitive grounds of occasional word-formation, cognitive mechanisms and procedures underlying it are described. Among which are the following: cognitive procedure of deviation from the inherent meaning and pejoration of meaning. It makes a case for application of such cognitive analysis to reveal new knowledge transmitted via pseudoborrowing. |
