Popis: Facing the importance of electric energy for human survival and development, studies on sustainability are indispensable. In this sense, the oceans are a vast source of renewable energy, due to their abundance on the Earth's surface and their various forms of use such as: waves, tides, sea currents, thermal energy and salinity gradients. Thus, this article aims to survey and reflect on technological, economic and environmental impacts in the generation of electricity, through marine energy. Brazil has a minimum potential of 40 GW that can be used from its coastline waters. Scientific advances to improve technology may enable a favorable cost-benefit ratio. This factor does not preclude the possibility that there is already a short-term investment in this option.
