In 1986, the first anonymous 4 nummi, cross/delta type, were recorded in excavations carried out at the Byzantine district in the ancient Carthago Spartaria (Cartagena, Spain). Forty-five are studied on this paper. Most of them come from the city of Cartagena itself, in stratigraphies dating to the late sixth or early seventh century, or from the area corresponding to the Byzantine "provincia Spaniae" or bordering areas. The geographical origin of these finds, their archaeological dating and historical records allow to reinforce the hypothesis of a Byzantine mint in Carthago Spartaria during the existence of that province (A.D. 555-624). |
