Popis: Can mundane, family interactions, like preparing a snack for a child, be a work of mercy? Or are such actions better understood as acts of justice? If so, what counts as mercy? Should works of mercy be limited to public and dramatic actions as common usage often implies, or almsgiving, as it was in the early church? To investigate these questions, I draw on the writings and speeches of Pope Francis. He initiated a year of mercy, during which he issued an apostolic exhortation on the family. He also insists that faith is not merely an abstract commitment but something that must be lived in the everyday. Engaging and building on Pope Francis’ work, I propose that not only can everyday family interactions be a work of mercy but that the family is foundational for understanding and being formed in mercy.
