Scientists concerned with the visibility of natural manifestations quickly turned to mechanical recording instruments to create images of the observations gathered during their experiments. Adopted by modern science, microcinematography – the combination of the microscope and the film camera – appears to be a unique way to explore the mutations of phenomena inaccessible to human perception. The filmic recording of microscopic observations becomes a means to access new forms of knowledge. Since microcinematography produces images in which « objectivity » and « subjectivity » cannot exist without each other, scientific films are sometimes intertwined with aesthetic concerns. Indeed, it seems the films that result from the intersection between science and cinema possess an experimental determination that allows them to make biological observations as well as filmic experiments. |
