Popis: Several studies have shown that there are gaps in academic achievement between youth in care and those who have never had a placement experience. Differences are also noted in relation to the number and type of placement experienced by these youths. In fact, youths in rehabilitation centres or group homes represent a subgroup at risk of experiencing a negative experience in school. The purpose of this article is to understand how placement in a rehabilitation centre or group home influences the school experience of this population. To answer this question, life course theory was used as a paradigm to understand how the historical, spatiotemporal, social, experiential and transitional dimensions associated with placement influence their school experience. Based on biographical interviews with 35 young people aged between 14 and 18 years old, about half of whom were living at the time in residential care and the other half in a group home, results of the study show how youths’ placement histories, the conditions of their placement and the support they receive in the context of their placement influence their school experience. We finally identify avenues to improve the educational experience of young people in residential care.
