Popis: | This paper, of a methodological nature, aims to discuss the use of quantitative methods in tourism history. As a first step, we will endeavour to understand why this type of approach has been little used by historians who have studied the two-sided object, tourism, both a social leisure activity and an economic service sector. The difficulty of finding relevant figures to quantify developments, particularly at the regional level, will be at the heart of our discussion. Indeed, the statistical series are largely incomplete until at least the beginning of the 20th century. As a second step, the purpose will focus on the relevance of such approaches for the analysis of regional tourism. Based on the case of the Lake Geneva region and its main tourist centres (Geneva, Lausanne, Vevey-Montreux and Évian), the analysis will underline the multiple methodological contributions of the reconstruction of statistical series from historical sources, while pointing out the difficulties and limitations of such a work. By showing trends on graphs, the quantitative data reconstructed not only confirmed or refuted certain research hypotheses, but also brought to light new questions and challenged stereotypes long used in historiography. The statistical series also made it possible to develop a comparative approach with other Swiss tourist centres, which revealed certain specificities of the Lake Geneva region. Two areas of quantification will be compared successively: the evolution of the tourism economy and that of the tourism offer in the transport and hotel sectors. |
