This paper questions the recurrent tendency of French mean stream critical sociology to ignore or neglect « ideas » in its analysis of situated action. The success of Christopher Browning’s book Ordinary Men functions here as a symptom because it ignores methodically the intention of the agents and comes therefore to erroneous conclusions. The question is then why so contestable results are valued by French critical sociology. To answer this question one needs to unveil the operation of de-politicization, although never assumed, in order to come to ready made critical lessons which are formulated before any empirical inquiry. |
