Ultrasonic-Magnetic field coaxial hybrid controlling the microstructure and mechanical properties of 304 stainless steel GTAW joints

Popis: A new method of Ultrasonic-Magnetic field coaxial hybrid GTAW (U-M-GTAW) was proposed in this paper to improve the joints properties by coaxially coupling ultrasonic vibration and magnetic field to the welding arc. The microstructure and mechanical properties of 304 stainless steel in the welded joints of GTAW, Ultrasonic-GTAW (U-GTAW), Magnetic field-GTAW (M-GTAW), and U-M-GTAW were compared and analyzed to clarify the mechanism of microstructure evolution and mechanical properties changes under the combined action of the ultrasonic and magnetic field. The results showed that the U-GTAW arc energy was increased and the grain size in the joint center was reduced by 25.7% compared to GTAW. The heat affected zone (HAZ) of the M-GTAW joint almost disappeared and the columnar crystals gradually transformed into equiaxed crystals, exhibiting the lowest texture strength. When ultrasonic and magnetic field were applied to GTAW together, the grain size of the U-M-GTAW joint center was reduced by 12.4% compared to GTAW, and the joint center was almost completely transformed into equiaxed crystals. The external energy fields all improved the mechanical properties of the joints, with the most significant improvement in U-M-GTAW.
